We would not be here without our community. So much of what we are able to do is owed to a long line of dedicated and talented community members who have donated time, labour and money to help keep us on the high-street. Check out how you can join in below.

Volunteering

Volunteers play a pivotal role in the operation of October Books and we are always looking for people to help out in various capacities across the business. We have several volunteer roles, so please click the button below to get more information.

Volunteers are also invited to socials and get 20% off books after completing five weeks of regular volunteering with us.

Book Buying Group

We always want to make sure that the books on our shelves are representative of the interests of the community.

In this spirit, the goal of book buying group is to gather together a cross-section of the customer base, and get input into the book buying process. If you are interested in helping to curate our shelves, pop an email to catalina@octoberbooks.org with the subject 'Book Buying Group'. The group meets in person every final Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm in the shop but if you can't make it email Catalina who will speak to you about your book interests.

Gardening group

Did you know we have a small community garden at the rear of the shop, managed by volunteers?
We are passionate about a greener and cleaner high street and are really keen to see our garden grow.

At the moment we are looking for:

  • Donations of compost
  • Someone handy with wood to create a few planting areas in pallets
  • Donations of plants for plant and seed swaps (in compost only)
  • People who love to garden!

Want us to stock your book?

Have you written a book and hope that we can stock it at October Books?

We sadly now do not stock local author books unless they are from a significant publishing house. We also do not stock self published books. This is because these titles sadly do not sell.

What we can offer is that authors can have our Community Space for free on Saturday afternoons to launch their book to friends and family. We can also post their event once on our social media and display a poster in our window. We would take 30% of book sales. The book would need to be aligned with our ethos and code of conduct.
