The accompanying reading list for Power Station, the art-ivism documentary
Share
On 31st March, October Books, Transition Southampton, and SO Solar Advice are presenting the art-ivism documentary Power Station. Before that, let’s take a look at the reading list that all three organisations have curated.
Useful Art: How Activist Artists Can Change the World by John Byrne
Who is to say that art only belongs within museums and galleries? Author John Byrne spent many years looking at artists creating spaces, projects, and collaborations that might not look like artworks but are actually art projects in disguise. These projects are strong evidence of the limitless nature of art, and its possibility to make communities better ones, where people communicate, happenings happen, and crowds gather for a meaningful cause.
Frontierlands by Hazel Sheffield
Frontierlands by Hazel Sheffield is a book filled with community inspiration from around the UK, communities, who are just getting on and creating the future they want for their local area, like Dan and Hilary in Power Station. Hazel was recently in the shop talking about Frontierlands.
100 Artists' Manifestos : From the Futurists to the Stuckists by Alex Danchev
100 Artists' Manifestos : From the Futurists to the Stuckists by Alex Danchev is a great book to dip into and discover the stories of the future that many contemporary artists would like to see. Like Dan and Hilary in Power Station, this book emphasises the importance of art in creating imaginative futures
One of our collaborators in the Power Station film screening is Transition Southampton, and one of the books they have recommended is From What Is to What If: Unleashing the Power of Imagination to Create the Future We Want by Rob Hopkins. Again, the book tells stories of communities all around the world who are doing things differently and taking the step to create the more equitable and fair future they want to see.
