A Tale of Two Strollers

Naomi:
I’m lucky to live just a stone’s throw away from the Parkrun hotspot that is the Common. Sure, I wish there was more street lighting on my walk down so I could enjoy longer evening strolls in winter without looking over my shoulder, but even a quick 20-minute walk to the pond and back does the trick. Winter wildlife sightings may not be as abundant, but there’s something calming about the whole experience nevertheless.
When I venture into the city centre, my go-to is Saint Mary’s Church. On Thursdays, it opens as a pay-what-you-can-afford space, buzzing with a bright and welcoming community. Afterward, I’ll pop into Café Thrive or Coffeelogy for a pick-me-up, then head to Ocean Village to admire the floating millions (and quietly wrestle with the love and hate I have for these boats). Luckily, an evening drink at The Dancing Man usually helps put those emotions to rest. I love the little hill.
Clare:
I have a favourite Southampton circular route that weaves through the city’s incredible green spaces, hidden gems, and a few favourite cafes.. It’s about 9 miles long, I think it is so amazing that we have this much almost continuous open space in our city (don’t forget, we’re a National Park City!).
My walk begins at my front door, taking me through Riverside Park to Mansbridge, across to Monks Brook, and along its peaceful path for about half a mile. Then it’s a cut-through to Swaythling Station, along the Flower Roads to Daisy Dip, and up Bassett Greenway. I cross The Avenue to reach the municipal golf course and enjoy its serene surroundings. The route winds back through the Sports Centre, across The Common, and finally home via Outer Avenue and Horseshoe Bridge.
One of my favourite moments? Sitting at the golf course clubhouse, watching the sun go down.
Our Winter Challenge to You:
Bundle up, grab a flask with your favourite hot drink, and head out to rediscover your local green spaces. Whether it’s a short walk to the nearest park or a longer trek through hidden trails, winter has a way of revealing new beauty in familiar places.
