Celebrating Community Spirit: October Books in the Southampton Forward 'City Reflections' Campaign
Share
At October Books, we’ve always believed in the power of community. As a co-operative bookshop in the heart of Southampton, we’re proud to be more than just a place to buy books. So, when we learned we were nominated as part of the Southampton Forward Community Legends campaign, we were honoured.
This campaign shines a spotlight on everyday individuals, groups, and organisations making a positive difference in Southampton. To be included among so many incredible nominees is humbling and exciting, although we are not sure how we feel about our faces being enlarged and projected for all to see.
The campaign culminates in the City Reflections event, a light and sound installation running from February 14–23, 2025, at The Esplanade in Westquay. Every evening from 6 PM to 9 PM, the installation will showcase the stories and faces of the 50 nominated “Community Legends.” We can’t wait to see how this event captures the spirit of Southampton and celebrates the people who make it such a special city.
A huge thank-you to those who nominated us and to Southampton Forward.
We encourage everyone to check out City Reflections in February and join in celebrating the people who make Southampton shine. If you’ve visited October Books, volunteered with us, or attended one of our events, know that you’ve been part of this story, too.
Additional light shows at local community hubs—including the MP3 Building, Mansel Park Pavilion in Milbrook, the 29th Southampton Scouts Hut in Portswood, Highpoint Venue in Thornhill and St Mary’s Stadium in Northam – bring this celebration in the neighbourhoods of the people featured and the communities who nominated them.
Here’s to community power!
