Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, this is thrilling debut novel from an exceptional new voice, Cherie Jones. How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House tells the story of the clashes between British expats who populate the Caribbean, and the local population who begrudgingly serve them, exposing the poverty, racism, and violence that lie just beyond the veil of paradise. With a kaleidoscopic cast of characters, Jones’ novel marks one of the most exciting debut novels since Zadie Smith’s explosive White Teeth. Writing on themes of Post-Colonialism and Racial Inequality, How The One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House is an unforgettable novel not to be missed!

How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House, by Cherie Jones

Paperback, £8.99

In Baxter's Beach, Barbados, Lala's grandmother Wilma tells the story of the one-armed sister, a cautionary tale about what happens to girls who disobey their mothers. For Wilma, it's the story of a wilful adventurer, who ignores the warnings of those around her, and suffers as a result.

When Lala grows up, she sees it offers hope - of life after losing a baby in the most terrible of circumstances and marrying the wrong man. And Mira Whalen? It's about keeping alive, trying to make sense of the fact that her husband has been murdered, and she didn't get the chance to tell him that she loved him after all. How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House, is the powerful, intense story of three marriages, and of a beautiful island paradise where, beyond the white sand beaches and the wealthy tourists, lies poverty, menacing violence and the story of the sacrifices some women make to survive.

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
