Booker Prize winner!
If you haven’t seen the news, the Booker Prize winner for 2023 is Prophet Song.
Prophet Song, the latest title by Paul Lynch - depicting an Ireland in the grip of a totalitarian regime some time perhaps in the near future. A novel which asks big questions of the reader and perhaps reflects society more accurately than we wish to think.
The shortlist of books are below and all are available in the shop, as well as copies of the Prize Winner.
Study for Obedience by Sarah Bernstein - an unsettling novel about a woman who moves to a remote country to become her brother's housekeeper. Its a short book but one in which you need to linger on every line.
If I survive you by Jonathan Escoffery - this is a first novel for this author and contains a series of eight linked stories. A painful and funny book about belonging and alienation with subtle and profound insights into the complicated experiences of black immigrants to the US.
Western Lane by Chetna Maroo - another first novel which looks at grief through the eyes of 11-year old, squash-obsessed Gopi. A coming of age story about adolescence, first love and sisterhood, as well as a take on a family grappling with bereavement.
This Other Eden by Paul Harding - a tale of racism on an isolated island off the coast of Maine. The story opens with the arrival of a runaway slave, Benjamin Honey, and his Irish wife, Patience. One hundred years later their descendants and others face eviction from their island home.
