Southampton National Park City
Did you know that Southampton has been nominated as a National Park City and hopes to join London and Adelaide as currently established National Park Cities? A dedicated team of volunteers have been working on the project for a number of years and you can check out their progress on their website here. You can sign the charter in support of the project and read the stories of others who really want Southampton to be recognised for it’s green spaces and places, a city where people, culture and nature work together.
Explore some of Southampton’s green spaces yourself with a read of Ally Hayes and Wendy Stokes A walk around the Common and A Walk up the Avenue. Or try our very own Clare Diaper’s Station Walks book which describes a series of walks from or between all of Southampton’s railway stations as well as walks from stations further afield. All available in store only
An important part of our more than human world in our city are the trees that provide homes for a wide variety of other wildlife. There is roughly one mature tree for every resident in Southampton, with an estimated 267,000 trees. We could all adopt a tree! We have some great books in the shop that describe the life of our trees and the networks of fungi that support them, The Long, Long Life of Trees, Living with trees and Merlin Sheldrake’s wonderful Entangled Life. There’s also a growing selection of books about birds which will inspire and inform, from the incredible journey of swifts in Swifts and Us to all of Britain’s Birds. Order today and discover the secrets of the more than human world on our doorstep.
