In store now! The Inseparables, by Simone De Beauvoir

Written in 1954, and only recently discovered nearly 40 years after her death, The Inseparables is a literary event like no other. An undiscovered novel from Simone DeBeauvoir (The Second Sex), one of the founders of Second Wave Feminism and Existentialism, The Inseparables harkens back to the golden age of French literaray life. A beautifully complex and moving portrait of the relationship between two young women as they attempt to make their way through an increasingly complex world in the vein of Gertrude Stein and Zadie Smith.

The Inseparables by Simone de Beauvoir

Hardback £14.99

When Andrée joins her school, Sylvie is immediately fascinated. Andrée is small for her age, but walks with the confidence of an adult. Under her red coat, she hides terrible burn scars. And when she imagines beautiful things, she gets goosebumps... Secretly Sylvie believes that Andrée is a prodigy about whom books will be written.

The girls become close. They talk for hours about equality, justice, war and religion; they lose respect for their teachers; they build a world of their own. But they can't stay like this forever.

Written in 1954, five years after The Second Sex, the novel was never published in Simone de Beauvoir's lifetime. This first English edition includes an afterword by her adopted daughter, who discovered the manuscript hidden in a drawer, and photographs of the real-life friendship which inspired and tormented the author.

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
