In store now! Summer Brother, by Jaap Robben

Nominated for this year’s International Booker Prize, Danish author Jaap Robben introduces us to thirteen year old Brian, abandoned by his detached and uncaring father, and left to care for his physically and mentally disabled brother for the summer. This compelling, tender, and unflinching novel of fraternal love is at once a novel of self-discovery, as well as a fitting reminder of how our actions and choices affect those around us in often profound, and unseen ways. With characters so fully realised that they feel as though they are standing right in front of you, Robben’s emotionally charged novel reveals the complexities of familial relationships as well as discussing honestly both the burden, and the unimaginable joys of caring for others.

Summer Brother by Jaap Robben

Paperback £12.99

Thirteen-year-old Brian lives in a trailer on a forgotten patch of land with his divorced and uncaring father. His older brother Lucien, physically and mentally disabled, has been institutionalized for years. While Lucien's home is undergoing renovations, he is sent to live with his father and younger brother for the summer.

Their detached father leaves Brian to care for Lucien's special needs. But how do you look after someone when you don't know what they need? How do you make the right choices when you still have so much to discover?

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
