In store now! Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson
Next in our series on ‘Mothers of the Revolution,’ we’re taking a look at Rachel Carson.
Lightyears ahead of her time, Carson was a marine biologist, conservationist, author, and one of the progenitors of the Climate movement. Silent Spring, published two years before her death in 1962 was one of the first books to ring the planet’s alarm bell, documenting the adverse environmental effects of pesticide use, and even targeted the chemical industry’s use of disinformation tactics.
To say the book landed her in hot water is an understatement - she was relentlessly pursued by the same companies she took aim at, who harangued and harassed her, and even attempted to have the book banned.
All of this is besides the point however: Silent Spring remains an astonishing read today. Carson’s insights are accented by her mastery of language and her ability to portray the beauty and power of nature. Rachel Carson, we did not deserve you!

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Paperback £9.99
Now recognized as one of the most influential books of the twentieth century, Silent Spring exposed the destruction of wildlife through the widespread use of pesticides Rachel Carson's Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Despite condemnation in the press and heavy-handed attempts by the chemical industry to ban the book, Carson succeeded in creating a new public awareness of the environment which led to changes in government and inspired the ecological movement. It is thanks to this book, and the help of many environmentalists, that harmful pesticides such as DDT were banned from use in the US and countries around the world.
This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Lord Shackleton, a preface by World Wildlife Fund founder Julian Huxley, and an afterword by Carson's biographer Linda Lear.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
