National Handwriting Day - 23rd January
National Handwriting day is celebrated each year on the 23rd January. It was started in 1977 by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association, based in Washington D.C., USA. They wanted to promote the use of pens, pencils and writing paper. The 23rd January was chosen as it was the birthday of John Hancock, the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. While this day may have originated in the US, it’s increasing in popularity each year.
With technology everywhere in today’s society, it seems like a good excuse to put down our phones, tablets or computers and enjoy the art of handwriting.
Take a look at a selection of books on calligraphy, the beautiful art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush.
