Future plans, 2024 and beyond
One of our Committee members (thank you Rosie) shared a short film with me and others, a letter to us from the 7th generation in the future. Its a powerful film called Seeding the Future and helps to reframe our current need to cling on to a way of being that is not serving us or our planet. At October Books we have thought about writing a 100 year plan (we’d like to think we’ll still be here in the 22nd century), not a detailed plan for the next 100 years but something which helps us to think outside of the current systems and cultural norms we work within. It helps by asking some What If questions….. things like What if books become more precious than gold in the next 100 years? What if there is a summer reading holiday for all the nation? What if community businesses are the only way of doing business…. come 2124? Let us know if you have any ‘What If…?’ thoughts that might help us plan a longer term regenerative future.
On a practical note and the needs of today, we are in the process of hiring a book buyer and shop worker. If you or anyone you know is interested please do have a read of the job description here. Application closing date is 14th January.
Our other news is that Clare will be taking a sabbatical in April this year for three months. Clare has been with October Books since 2016 and has led the team through some amazing highs and changes and also helped the organisation weather a few storms. ‘There’ll never be a good time to take a step back for a while’ says Clare ‘and although there are significant challenges for the organisation at the moment, we have a growing new team who want to see October Books thrive’.
If you would like to get more involved in October Books and help us shape the future for the next generation and the next seven, do drop Clare a line at clare@octoberbooks.org
