walking tour: Migrant Southampton - Past & Present

Saturday 26th June

in town - 2.30pm - walking tour - free entry

Please register via Eventbrite if you wish to attend so we know how many people to expect.

Join Tony Kushner and Parkes Institute on this inaugural walking tour linked to the book and walking tour guide: Southampton’s Migrant Past and Present. (Parkes Institute, 2021, available at October Books with a donation to two local refugee charities) or through the Parkes Institute.

The project, which also includes films, was sponsored by Mayflower400 and films linked to it can be found on the Mayflower400 website.

The walk will cover many different migrant histories from the medieval through to post-Second World War. Well known buildings will be reinterpreted through the lens of migration and many hidden sites will be uncovered. Taken together they will show that Southampton is a city built on migration and that its prosperity and culture have depended and been shaped by newcomers and their descendants.

Tony Kushner teaches and researches in the Parkes Institute and the History Department of the University of Southampton. He has written widely on migration, racism, heritage and belonging. He is Secretary of the South Hants Reform Jewish Community which organised the Migrant Southampton project

It begins at 2.30pm outside the Duke of Wellington Pub, 36 Bugle Street, Southampton SO14 2AH.

It ends at 4.30pm outside the Grapes in Oxford Street.

At 5pm there will be a buffet reception at God’s House Tower with bar.

The walking tour is accessible though there are uneven pavements in part of the one mile route. Please register via Eventbrite if you wish to attend so we can manage numbers on the day.

This is a free entry event, but if you'd like to sling October Books a donation, please do.

If you would like to reserve a copy of ‘Migrant Southampton: Past & Present’ to collect from the shop please email us at info@octoberbooks.org
