On the 2nd of February, 1922, James Joyce’s Ulysses was published by Sylvia Beech at Shakespeare & Co. bookshop in Paris. Whilst it was banned almost immediately, its position in literature has remained unchanged for a century. Through the relationship between it’s key protagonists, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus, a radical empathy is established. Ulysses is a novel both of the senses, and of the mind. It contains the full spectrum of human experience, from outright hilarity, to deeply felt sadness. Even a century later, there has never been another novel like it. In spite, or perhaps because of its imposing status in the literary cannon, it is often considered one of the best known but least read novels. It’s 100th anniversary is the best time to introduce yourself or become reacquainted with the greatest novel ever written.

To mark the Centenary, Daniel Mulhall has published Ulysses: A Reader’s Odyssey. This compelling and lucid journey through Joyce’s Ulysses emphasises both the inherent humanity in the novel, as well as clarifying some of the more challenging sections, making this incredible novel more approachable than ever.

Ulysses: A Reader’s Guide, by Daniel Mulhall
Paperback £13.99

Following the events of one single day in Dublin, the 16th June 1904, and what happens to the characters Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and his wife Molly, Ulysses is a monument to the human condition. It has survived censorship, controversy and legal action, and even been deemed blasphemous, but remains an undisputed modernist classic: ceaselessly inventive, garrulous, funny, sorrowful, vulgar, lyrical and ultimately redemptive. It confirms Joyce's belief that literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
