The debut book from a shining new generational voice, Brown Girl in the Ring is a gut-wrenching, witty, and nuanced memoir dealing with Olukemi Ogunyemi’s childhood battle against racial biases both within her own family, and in society more broadly. She approaches this battle in a nuanced, funny, and conversational tone that appeals to a wide spectrum of readers without losing any of the integrity of her potent understanding of race relations and white privilege in the UK. A timely, and hugely entertaining debut for lovers of Slay in Your Lane.

Brown Girl in the Ring by Olukemi Ogunyemi

Paperback £10.99

In this, her first book, she tells of her momentous struggle growing up as a mixed-race child in Scotland. She describes, in horrific, gut-wrenching detail, the treatment she received at the hands of the so-called 'good people' of Scotland; acts of racism that continued into adulthood and wreaked havoc for her as a wife and a mother of four children.

Her captivating story calls out unconscious, racial bias - even in her own family - but through the obvious pain and suffering, she still allows her sense of humour and her deep love for her husband and her children to shine through. Not content with just telling her story, Ogunyemi spells out her quest to tackle racism head-on, but not with a 'call to arms'. Forget anger and finger-pointing and think more sit-down chat with someone who understands. She lives and breathes compassion, not blame.

Olukemi Ogunyemi is a highly successful body therapist, who also speaks and blogs on racism and transgender issues - olukemiogunyemi.com

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
