Innovative, brash, heartbreaking, and hilarious. Words we can associate with Almudena Sánchez’s compelling Pharmakon. Detailing the author’s “year of depression”, this refreshingly frank memoir recalls Annie Earnux deals with Sánchez’s youth as an outsider in Mallorca, and how the effects of this alienation cause her to drift further from society as an adult. Compelling, rich, and deeply human.

Pharmakon by Almudena Sánchez , Katie Whittemore (translator)
Paperback £10.99

Pulling no punches in its 150 pages, Pharmakon is the story of an explosion, of the moment depression blew up the life the author thought she knew and settled in her body. But Pharmakon isn't a sad book; it is testimony, written with humour and intimacy by one of Spain's most singular voices, one that deftly combines wit, eccentricity, and warmth. Far from shrinking from taboos, Sánchez grabs hold of her depression and dredges it for the whys and hows, excavating her memory, behaviour, and craters of the mind: here there is infancy and the family home, youth at school in Mallorca and in the fields of Castile; psychiatrists who save and pills that bring her back to life; there are dreams, nightmares, and desires. And books, lots of books-some that serve to escape and others to understand what was happening in her head-because for Sánchez, literature is comfort, quest, and salvation. Pharmakon is an insight, from one of Spain's most singular voices, into the experience of depression and recovery.

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
