In store now! Nervous Conditions, by Tsitsi Dangarembga

Now well regarded for her searing and heartbreaking Booker nominated third novel, This Mournable Body (2020), Dangarembga’s career actually started nearly 40 years previous, with Nervous Conditions (1988). Newly republished, Nervous Conditions is a social realist account of 13 year old Tambudzai’s attempts to gain an education in Colonial Zimbabwe. After the death of her older brother, Tambudzai is suddenly thrust into education, with mounting familial and societal pressures on her shoulders. A coming-of-age story anyone in the world can relate to, whilst also an eviscerating commentary on Apharteid Zimbabwe. Nervous Conditions has been freshly recontextualised by Dangarembga’s newer work, but remains as breathtaking and essential now, as it was when it was first published.

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga

Paperback £8.99

Two decades before Zimbabwe would win independence and ended white minority rule, thirteen-year-old Tambudzai Sigauke embarks on her education. On her shoulders rest the economic hopes of her parents, siblings, and extended family, and within her burns the desire for independence. A timeless coming-of-age tale, and a powerful exploration of cultural imperialism, Nervous Conditions charts Tambu's journey to personhood in a nation that is also emerging.

We are open:

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
