In store now! Aphasia, by Mauro Javier Cardenas

This is the story of migration and reintegration. It is the story of shifting identities, of disparate experiences coalescing. It is also a literary triumph of the highest order by the most exciting voice to have emerged from South America since Roberto Bolano.

When Antonio’s sister disappears, he must confront the realities of his old life in Columbia, and how his past continue to fragment his identity in his new life in California. Attempting to subsume himself in American cinema, reliving his memories through his tape-recorder, and chasing women through seedy websites, the disappearance of his sister throws life into sharp focus. Told in Cardenas’ inimitable style, Aphasia is one of the funniest, and most heart-breaking novels published this decade. An absolute masterpiece.

Aphasia by Mauro Javier Cardenas

Paperback £8.99

Antonio is living a double life - and doing a pretty good job of it. By day he's Antonio, mild-mannered database analyst, recent divorce and father of two. In private, however, he spends hours on seedy pick-up websites or combing fiction and film for the solutions to his problems.

And then, Antonio's sister goes missing. Her disappearance forces Antonio to confront not only his own troubled past, but his mother's decision to leave Colombia with two young children in tow, his ex-wife's obsessive, unhappy relationship with her homeland and, ultimately, the reason for his sister's despair. Propulsive and freewheeling, bold and hilarious, Mauro Javier Cardenas' second novel is a daring examination of identity in a world that seems determined to fragment us.

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
