Shopping with us? Help those in need whilst you're here!

Here at October Books, we are more than a bookshop, so when the lockdown began back in March 2020 we encouraged you, our lovely customers, to purchase an extra item from our food and household shelves for us to deliver to our local food banks.

And you listened! We have delivered your items on a weekly basis for the duration of these strangest of times.

As you may have noticed, Winter is on the way, and the £20 Universal Credit uplift has now ended. As the weather gets colder, the financial effects of the pandemic continue to take their toll on many people in our city. Often resulting in vulnerable people having to choose between heating and eating.

Although foodbanks are not the answer to the causes of poverty, the need for them is still there.

So next time you’re in the shop (or shopping with us online) please consider adding 1 extra item to your basket and leaving it with us. We’ll do the rest! Not sure what the foodbanks need at the mo…? Here’s some ideas…

  • Rice

  • Pasta

  • TIns (soup/beans/tomatoes/pulses)

  • Treats (biscuits/chocolate/sweets/festive)

  • Spreads (jam/nut butter/choc spread)

  • Jars (pasta sauce/pesto)

  • Toiletries (soap/toothpaste/shower gel/shampoo/period products)

We are also a donation point for The Homeless Period. So make the most of those 2-for-1 offers on period products at your local chemist (or purchase ethical towels and tampons from us!) and drop them off behind our counter!

Your generosity is appreciated by all of us here at OB, and gratefully received by those who visit the foodbanks. Thank you for being brilliant.

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Keep doing what you’re doing and leave that extra space, sanitise those hands and pull on that mask. We know you’re smiling underneath it :)

You will see we have a QR code at the door, if you have the NHS COVID-19 app downloaded to your smart phone please scan this as you enter the shop.
