Generous donation of books to give away!

We are very honoured to announce that one of our customers has generously donated 100 copies of Those Who Forget by Geraldine Schwarz, a book about the author's parents and grandparents, German citizens pre and post Second World War.

The book describes how the author’s grandparents witnessed the rise of the Nazi’s and the persecution of Jews in their country. Geraldine uncovers papers and letters from her grandparents that identify their complicity in these events, and so raises the question about ‘How guilty were they?’ The story of her father is also documented and shared and his need to ask questions about the war  from an early age runs parallel to national and international responses to the Holocaust after the war. The book 'combines generations of family stories with the tale of Europe’s post war reckoning, and is an exploration of collective guilt, rising populism and learning lessons from our history’.

The person that donated these books to us would like us to give away the books, with the message of helping others to learn about the Holocaust and the ordinary lives of those involved, as well as a more general message of peace. We will be working with friends at The Parkes Institute over the coming months to help make this happen.

Tony Kushner has welcomed the offer of giving these books away for free with every purchase of Southampton’s Migrant past and Present. Tony’s book has been very popular as has the walking tour of our city that is described, and a second date will be announced soon. We will also attend the Holocaust Memorial Day event at the Parkes Institute in January 2023, the theme of which is ordinary people, something that Those Who Forget really brings to the fore.

If you would like a FREE copy of Those Who Forget, please do drop in to the shop or send us an email. We will need payment for P&P if you would like delivery. ALL monies raised from donations for your FREE copy of Those Who Forget,  will go to organisations who support refugees in the city and beyond, CLEAR and Southampton and Winchester Visitor Group.

We are open:

Monday - Saturday

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
