Join Phil Hubbard in the shop to hear about Borderland - a book about the edge of England, the death of the EU, and the end of the world.
Over the last two years, the convergence of Brexit, Covid-19 and the ‘migrant crisis’ put Kent in the headlines like never before. In his book, Phil Hubbard considers the past, present and future of this corner of England, and the influence of the changing relationship between the UK and its continental neighbours. Traversing the southeast coast, and bridging geography, history, archaeology and travel writing, the book poses important questions about the way that post-Brexit national identities can be better understood through a reading of these contested local landscapes, many of which are threatened by climate change and sea level change.
Phil Hubbard lives in Southampton but works as Professor of Urban Studies at King’s College London. He has published widely on questions of class, gentrification and urban change. His past books include Cities and Sexualities), The Battle for the High Street, and Key Ideas in Geography: City. Phil is donating his royalties from this book to the Kent Refugee Action Network.
Please register via Eventbrite for instructions to join and to help us with book ordering and to manage numbers on the shop floor. This is a free entry event, but there is a suggested donation of £3 to allow us to do more events like this. There will also be the opportunity to donate to Kent Refugee Action Network on the night.
