Black History Month: Why We Care at October Books

Why We Care About Black History Month at October Books

At October Books, we believe that understanding our past is crucial for building a more inclusive future. Black History Month is an essential time for reflection, celebration, and education about the rich contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout history. As a community benefit society and a co-operative, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and open space where every voice matters.

This October, we’re proud to have the Black History Month South's Colourism Exhibition, a groundbreaking photography showcase in partnership with Arts Council England. Featuring the poignant work of local photographer Nosa Malcom, this exhibition delves into the often-overlooked issue of colourism a prejudice that affects many within our communities. Through powerful imagery, it explores the nuanced ways this bias manifests, inviting us all to confront and challenge these issues head-on.

We invite you to join us in this exploration throughout the month. With free entry, come engage with the photography, participate in discussions, and reflect on how we can collectively work towards a more equitable society. Let’s celebrate Black History Month by amplifying voices, learning from one another, and taking meaningful steps toward a brighter future together.
