Accessibility
Here at October Books we strive to be as accessible as possible.
Our shop is accessed by one step, with a ramp being available on request. (Or by ringing the bell)
Inside the whole shop is all on one level.
Our toilet is accessible. We’re aware of the issues surrounding the chronic lack of access to toilets in public spaces and so our toilet is available to customers.
We have no background music which we know can be an issue for some with audio processing or sensitivity issues.
For ticketed events, we provide a quota of free tickets for all our events to make sure they are accessible to all.
We have a range of seating available for our events. The majority don’t have arm rests and all are free-standing. If you are concerned about whether seats will fit you or hold your weight do speak to a member of staff before the event and we can show you the available options.
We are a registered safe place and part of Southampton Safe Places Network. We are also part of the Southampton Welcomes Breastfeeding scheme.
Though we strive to be as accessible as possible, we know we can always do better. If you would like to be part of a team of volunteers that not only highlights issues of accessibility but also works to resolve them please do email us.
In terms of stock we have a disability and neuro-diversity section. We also have lots of children’s titles highlighting disability, difference and diversity.
Quick reads titles, which are short accessible books with interesting and diverse content for adults, perfect for those who struggle with reading, have lower levels of literacy or for those who are learning English.
We can also get hold of audio books for customers and large print books of certain titles on request.
